An Introduction to Lines of Development

Have you noticed how some of use are really good at some things and not so good at others? Some are highly developed in, say, logical thinking, but are poorly developed in communication. Some people have highly advanced cognitive development (they’re super smart) but poor moral development (they can be mean and ruthless).

How Many Intelligences?
The idea of Multiple Intelligences is a well known concept introduced by Howard Gardner. It states that human beings have a variety of intelligences (cognitive, emotional, spiritual, interpersonal, etc), and that most people excel in one or two of these intelligences, but do poorly in the others.

Lines of Development
In the Integral Map, these are referred to as Lines of development, because each intelligence can grow through three major stages or levels (or through any of the stages of any of the development models you might prefer to use for a given situation).

An easy way to represent these multiple intelligences is to use an Integral Psychograph (below). This contains the 3 major stages (or levels of development) as well as 5 of the most important intelligences (lines of development).

The 3 stages can apply to any developmental line – emotional, spiritual, musical, interpersonal, etc. The level of a line refers to the altitude of that development with regards growth and consciousness.

Example
Let’s look at one line of development at different stages: Emotional development to stage 1 means that your emotions are centred on “me”. If you develop to stage 2 your emotions will expand from “me” to “us”, and attachments to loved ones (family, friends, maybe tribe or nation). Stage 3 emotions will open up the capacity for care that includes all human beings in worldcentric compassion.

We see from the psychograph how lines of development grow through levels (or stages) of development. The psychograph can help you see where your potential lies. It allows you to address your strengths and weaknesses, find where you excel, and consider how best to offer the world your deepest gifts.
